Are you looking to improve your pup’s diet? You may have heard of Nom Nom, a company dedicated to making fresh, nutritionally-balanced pet food that caters to the health needs of every dog.

Many parents aren’t thrilled with their dog’s kibble or wet food options. Some have dogs with health issues, allergies, and food sensitivities. But all dog parents want the very best food to help their pup thrive.

That’s why Nom Nom’s team of Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionists develops your dog’s meals the same way many chefs create meals for humans: with recipes meticulously crafted, with quality, flavor, and texture in mind. Nom Nom is proving that healthy dog food can also be craveable and delicious.

Just tell Nom Nom a little about your dog — traits, preferences, and health history —and they’ll create nutrient-rich meals, personalized down to the calorie to keep your dog in tip-top shape.

In this review, we’re going to take a close look at what the brand has to offer, evaluate the benefits of feeding dogs fresh food vs standard kibble, and compare Nom Nom to a few well-known competitors.

Our experience trying Nom Nom

Kodhi is one of the fastest (and least picky) eaters that I know, but sometimes that gets her into trouble.  I recently noticed that after her meals, she’d sometimes have stomach issues.

In my search for alternative, healthier food sources for her, I came across Nom Nom, and I’m glad I decided to give it a try!

To speak for Kodhi, it’s the best thing she’s ever eaten (can’t get much closer to food straight from the dinner table!). And I can say that we won’t be turning back to kibble.

We talk more about our full experience & include a video of our first few meals later in the article, but let’s first get into some of the research I did to discover Nom Nom and all of their amazing benefits.

To evaluate whether or not fresh food is the way to go, I turned to the data. One study tested six commercial dog foods made with restaurant-grade meats and vegetables and found that fresh foods significantly improved digestion when compared with more processed alternatives.

The study was the first of its kind and supports most dog owners’ intuitions that less-processed foods are indeed easier on their pets’ digestive tracts.

Scientists have also shown that fresh, minimally processed dog foods help create smaller bowel movements and can sustain a dog with a lower quantity of food at each feeding. Without a bunch of filler, your dog can eat less, poop less, and be happier.

Who should consider fresh dog food

It’s true that fresh dog foods shipped to your door on dry ice cost more than canned or bagged dog food sold on pet store shelves. But the health benefits of fresh dog food are definitely worth it.

Of course, you should always discuss major dietary changes with your vet, but Nom Nom has provided great benefits to dogs who suffer from some of the following:

  • Low energy
  • Dull coat
  • Allergies
  • Food sensitivities
  • Picky eater
  • Compromised immune system
  • Arthritis
  • Obese
  • Is prone to or currently suffers from a disease

Although it’s impossible to know how much investing in fresh dog food now will save you over the long run, being more proactive about your dog’s diet can bring peace of mind in knowing that you’re doing everything you can, especially to avoid conditions that could incur hefty vet bills down the road.

In general, if you want the best food you can find for your dog without the artificial ingredients in many canned or bagged pet foods, then fresh dog food like Nom Nom is a great alternative.

Our own personal experience with Nom Nom

We (Kodhi) tried Nom Nom for ourselves and can confidently report that it was well-loved and devoured. After only 4 days of transitioning to Nom Nom’s food, there is no doubt that she (or I) will ever look the same way at kibble again.

In this video, take a look at our experience of our first couple of days with Nom Nom’s meals – how we transitioned from her usual kibble to the full servings of Nom Nom, Kodhi’s reactions, and more.

Kodhi’s only been on the fully fresh Nom Nom diet for about two weeks, but I have already started seeing differences. Like I said, meal time is literally the most exciting time of the day for her, but now she’s astonished that she, too, gets food from the fridge. She spins to and from the fridge in excitement and searches for the spoon to lick after I’m done preparing.

One of the best parts is that one pack equals one meal, so I don’t need to worry about messy scooping or storage, as is the case with some competitors.

Besides the immediate meal time, I’ve noticed that she’s been shedding less despite the weather being hotter (her Aussie tumbleweeds have turned into smaller hair-dust-bunnies), her poops are more regular and much smaller than we’re used to (which I was most surprised by!), and her breath is immensely improved.

I truly had no idea of the health benefits that we’d experience. I went into it skeptical, hoping that her stomach issues would be fixed and her poops would be more regular. We’ve been floored with the results. We’re so excited to continue our journey with Nom Nom and have recommended it to all of our dog friends.

How to get started with Nom Nom

Nom Nom made it really easy to get started, with a specialized program that recommends certain recipes and amounts based on the unique health needs of your dog. They list all ingredients in the packs, so if you know your dog has a certain disdain for any ingredients, you can make your own choices.

In my video above, you can see the questions that we went through to determine the best portions for Kodhi based on her dietary history, allergies, sensitivities, and immediate health and wellness goals. They specifically asked for her age, weight, activity level, known allergies, and known sensitivities.

After I put in Kodhi’s information, Nom Nom created her recipe recommendations and portions according to her nutritional needs. I’m lucky that Kodhi isn’t picky and doesn’t have any allergies or sensitivities, but Nom Nom makes it incredibly easy for dogs that do!

An option that we have not yet used is the ability to learn more about Kodhi’s sensitivities and nutritional needs by ordering the Gut Health Kit. The testing kit looks at the microorganisms in her stomach to determine scientific insight into their nutritional needs – a great way to make sure she receives the right fresh foods to maximize her health and digestive comfort.

Review of Nom Nom: Is it the best fresh food option for dogs?

It’s time to take a close look at what Nom Nom offers, how much it costs, how its subscription service works, and how it compares to alternatives. Check out the chart below to see how it compares to other fresh food competitors:

What is Nom Nom?

Nom Nom was founded in 2015 by a family hoping to improve their own dog’s diet and help her compromised immune system. After seeing the miraculous difference in her health that fresh food made, Nom Nom was born.

Today, Nom Nom has supplied over 40 million fresh meals to pets across the country while still intensely valuing the integrity of ingredients.

How does Nom Nom’s subscription delivery work?

After the two-week trial, most customers receive monthly shipments of Nom Nom. Half portions are available if you’d like to ease into fresh food, and you can change your meal plan or shipping schedule at any time, so the service will grow along with your dog.

Deliveries are packed with dry ice to ensure the food arrives cold and ready to place in the freezer until you need it. It’s great that all of the packaging is recyclable, and Nom Nom also has free shipping.

The Verdict: is Nom Nom dog food worth it?

After trying Nom Nom ourselves and doing all the research there is to give a thorough review, we can safely say that for both humans and dogs alike, Nom Nom is worth it — at least for me and my pup, Khodi.

From my (a human’s) point of view, the fresh, scientifically researched ingredients, the process through which you get your subscription, and the daily price breakdown all make Nom Nom a great option for improving your pet’s diet and overall health and livelihood. I feel great knowing that I’m giving Kodhi the exact amount of nutrition she needs so she’s her healthiest and happiest – no more guesswork. Plus, Kodhi is worth it!

With the research first-hand experience in how much better fresh, AAFCO-certified food is for your dog, it’s a no-brainer to at least give Nom Nom’s trial a go. Kodhi’s improved shedding, more regular bathroom breaks, better breath, and excitement before and after every meal makes Nom Nom the best decisions I’ve ever made for her.

Your dog will have real, whole ingredients in their meals, and you’ll see in both their energy and lasti
